While not as elegant as Pro Tools’ Clip Gain function, Logic does offer a functional alternative for evening out a track’s volume. It even adjusts the waveform’s size to reflect the new volume.

We offer six Logic Pro X tips and tricks that you might not know about.

Let’s try something different this month. Rather than focus on a specific problem, I’m going to offer up some of my favourite techniques and workflows, many of which I’ve found invaluable! Some of these have been covered in SOS before, while some may be brand new to you, but the idea is to shake you out of your Logic patterns and introduce you to some new ways of doing things, without you having to get your hands too dirty.

No Pain, No Gain

One feature of Pro Tools that I’ve recently become envious of is Clip Gain: the ability to adjust the level of a region within a track without using the volume fader or automation. You can imagine how excited I was to learn that Logic has its own version of Clip Gain. It’s not as obvious as a little fader on each region, though, so it took me a little digging to find it.

Simply put, when you have an audio region selected, turn your attention to the Region Inspector box (open the Inspector Column to make it visible). From there, all you need to do is adjust the Gain field (see above). You’ll notice that this will adjust the waveform size to match the tweaks, ostensibly altering your recording level for the selected region. Admittedly, I overlooked this feature due to the fact that the Region Inspector defaults to MIDI parameters — it’s only with audio selected that the Gain option appears.

As with most of Logic’s functions, you can adjust the gain for multiple regions at once if they are all selected. When working on a track with multiple regions, it might be a good idea to grab the Region Inspector (the pointer turns to a hand) and drag it to the area where you’re working; at least until they provide a Key Command for changing a region’s gain.

Power Failure

You know that scene in teenage coming-of-age movies where the parents open the front door just when the kid’s party is in full steam? Invariably, you’ll hear the sound of the music slowly dying down as if the power has been shut off. There are several ways to create this effect, but Logic has some tools to streamline the process.

Start by placing the locators from a little before you want the track to start slowing down, and ending where you want the clip to end.

Next, bounce the track as you normally would. Disable any bus processing since this mix will be played in your session (and thus would otherwise be going through the bus processing twice). You could use Bounce In Place at this point but, depending on what plug-ins you are using and where, the results may vary.

Mute the regions you just bounced. Import the audio from your Bounces folder (or the Project Audio List) and place it in its original spot (a tip on this is coming up).

Now right-click on the region and select Convert / Convert To New Sampler Track (or use the appropriate key command). Give it a name and choose a starting trigger note that’s easy to get to on your keyboard. Select OK. Logic will create a track with a new EXS24 instrument. When you hit the trigger key that you chose, you should hear the portion of the song you originally selected. Even better, Logic will automatically create a MIDI region with the sample key already activated.

Mute the bounced audio, open the EXS24 instrument, and change the pitch-bend range to 12. Now you can slow down your track with the Pitch-Bend wheel, and perform it to taste.

This may seem a little convoluted, but explaining the procedure is more time-consuming than the actual execution.

After bouncing and muting the portion of the song between the locators, create an EXS24 instrument of the bounce (using ‘Convert To New Sampler Track’). Then change the pitch-bend range to 12 and play in the effect.

Back Where You Belong

I’m embarrassed and annoyed that it took me so long to stumble onto the key command for ‘Move To Original Recording Position’ (Cmd+Click the relevant region, go to ‘Move’, and the key command as configured on your system will be listed there). This one little manoeuvre has since become such a go-to that I actually harbour resentment towards anyone who knew about it and didn’t tell me.

In its most basic function, it can be used when you accidentally move an audio region and aren’t sure where it came from (caffeine addicts like me know what I’m talking about). Or if you’ve been editing audio and realise it all sounded better before you started messing around and want everything back where it was.

But it goes deeper than that. For instance, in the slow-down effect I just spoke about, at the point where you import the audio, instead of putting it between the locators, you can just drop it anywhere and hit this key command, and viola! The region is where it should be.

This is also a great tool when dealing with tracks for video. Now that most post-production people are spoiled by composers sending them one audio track per reel, they are annoyed by the extra work of placing each cue individually. No problem, you can do it for them. Just grab all your mixes, drop them into a new session, engage Move To Original Recording Position and the files will snap into place.

Slice & Dice

Did you know that holding Shift while cutting a region will cut it into equal segments? At whatever point you use the Scissor tool to make the first cut (measure, quarter note, etc.), Logic will make identical cuts for the duration of the region. This is a simple way to make stutter edits and gating effects.

Once sliced, you can change the length, volume, panning and so on to create movement and motion on-the-fly.

Constant Change

It seems like every soft synth and sample library maker uses conflicting MIDI controllers (CCs) to add life to their sounds. If you don’t have a MIDI controller with enough knobs or faders, or if you don’t want to reassign the MIDI implementation of each instrument, this next trick might be for you.

Just throw in the Modifier from the MIDI FX section of the instrument’s fader, and in two clicks you can reassign any MIDI CC to another; you can even open multiple instances and then save the channel strip. I now do most of my sound manipulations with just one wheel and one knob.

Pick A Side

All composers for media are confronted with this scenario regularly: you are given a video to score, with dialogue on one channel and temp music on the other. If you want to hear the dialogue without the temp music, you have to pan the track to one side. Even if you don’t mind hearing both at once, you cannot adjust the volume of one without it affecting the other.

You can see in the Track Editor that this file has two different elements on each side (dialogue and temp music). After copying the region to another track, I use the pull-down menu next to the input assignment to select which side of the stereo file to play.

Logic has a brilliant solution for this that doesn’t involve any bouncing, converting, exporting or importing. Simply copy the stereo region to another stereo track. Now look at the channel strips for each one. The little button next to the input is where you choose if the track is stereo or mono. However, if you right-click on it, you will discover some interesting options including Left and Right (only visible on stereo tracks). These let you decide which side of the stereo file you want to hear. Put one of the tracks on Left, the other on Right, and now you can control each channel’s volume and pan separately.

Hardly a week goes by that I don’t find a new tool or workflow improvement under Logic’s hood. As I find more, I’ll let you know.

As the DAW market continues to expand, and the tools available for home recording enthusiasts become more accessible, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the number of options available.

We’re here to try and help you with that. And today, we’re going to look at a couple of the long-standing stalwarts of digital music production: Logic Pro and Pro Tools. If you’ve been looking to invest in some software for recording music, you’ve unquestionably encountered these two names.

Both do similar things, both have great respect in audio engineering circles, and both cross the line from hobbyist software into something a little bit more serious.

As far as recording software goes, this is premium level stuff. It’s for people who need to know a little bit what they’re doing.

Bottom Line Up Front Summary: If you are just getting started with DAW tools, I’d recommend starting with the more user friendly Pro Tools here.

Main Differences Between Logic Pro vs Pro Tools

Learn Logic Pro

The main differences between Logic Pro and Pro Tools are:

  • Pro Tools is more industry-standard, whereas Logic Pro is popular with musicians
  • Pro Tools offers a Free Trial, whereas Logic Pro does not
  • Pro Tools offers flexible Yearly , Monthly, or one time paid plans, whereas Logic Pro offers a 1-time $199 fee

So, let’s start looking at these two products in a bit more detail.

Say hi to Logic Pro

The first version of Logic Pro was called Notator Logic, and it was released all the way back in 1993. It was developed by a company called C-Lab, who later became Emagic.

The first five versions of Logic were available on both Mac and Windows. However, in 2002, Apple announced that they had bought the software, and starting with Logic 6, it would only be available on Mac OS. This, of course, annoyed the Windows users: it’s never been established how much business was lost over the matter, but sales of the Mac version have continued to increase.

Logic Pro is now in its tenth edition, which they’ve called Logic Pro X, because Xs are cool. It’s come a long way from its starts a sequencer for Atari.

Say hi to Pro Tools

Pro Tools is celebrating its 30th birthday this year, so happy birthday to you!

Pro Tool first appeared as Sound Designer, created by two Berkeley graduates in 1984. The following year – 1985 – they were offering downloadable features for the software.

Remember… this was in 1985!

It became Sound Tools in 1989, and was renamed Pro Tools in 1991. That first Pro Tools cost a whopping $6,000! It’s hailed as the first digital multitrack recording software, which makes it funny to think that something that originally cost so much led to something you can now get online for free!

One of its interesting claims to fame is that Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca was the first number one single to have been entirely recorded, edited, and mixed in Pro Tools. So that’s kind of cool, I guess?

Pricing options

Logic Pro

Logic Pro X is available for $199 as an app from the Mac App Store. And that’s that. There are no other pricing options. There were no discounts for individuals upgrading from the previous version, which is unusual in DAW version progression and pricing. There doesn’t seem to be any discounts for education or anything, another unusual aspect for commercial, high-end DAWs.

You may have noticed that I only mentioned the Mac App Store? Yeah, Logic Pro isn’t available for Windows or Linux or anything. I’m sure I’ll return to that point a little later. There ends the discussion of Logic Pro’s pricing options.

Pro Tools

Pro tools have a little more variety on offer in terms of purchase options. Firstly, it’s available for both Mac and PC – double-ish the market potential, right off the bat. Secondly, similarly to many software packages, it has various price points to make it as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, with some variations on the features across each one. It currently runs a tiered, freemium pricing system.

The first tier is totally free forever, but obviously has restrictions. The main one being that you can only record up to 16 tracks, it includes 23 plugins and includes 3.1 GB of sounds. The next tier up cost $24.92 per month. With that, you can record between 32 and 128 track of music in the sequencer, depending on the kHz settings. You also get up to 128 auxiliary tracks, and you can now play with video.

Only one video, but it’s a start. The included sounds also gets bumped to 5.4 GB. That’s not an insignificant jump from the free version. And finally, the top tier. That’ll set you back $83.25 per month. Here, you can record up to 256 tracks in a project! Woah! I feel like that’s for orchestral arrangements, and maybe big choirs. It’s probably a bit unnecessary for your average Joe Schmoe home recording enthusiast, but, I guess it’s good to know that it’s there?

If you’re a video enthusiast, this is probably the tier for you though, as it allows up to 64 video tracks. The main thing you’ll notice across the increasing tiers is the capacity of each one. In addition to the regular tiers, the creators of Pro Tools haven’t forgotten the world’s underfunded education sector, and offer a discounted range just for that.

For the education version, if your budget will let you pay for it all upfront for a year, it’ll work out at $8.25 per month – that’s $99 for a whole year. Yeah, I know: all the home recording enthusiasts on a budget are now checking if their teacher friends can blag them this discounted version.

If you need to convince your school’s budget holder of the value before they’ll commit to a year, you could try paying monthly for $9.99 per month, just for a month or two to demonstrate its value. And it may be difficult to get this last education option at your first proposal, but for $299, you’ll get a perpetual license to use Pro Tools for educational purposes. That means no annual renewals, and not asking for money every year. That’s a sweet deal.

Features

OK, these are primarily aimed at very serious home users, and professional producers, so either of these will do an awful lot… not all of it making for a particularly riveting read. It might be easier to run through what they both do, and then give specifics about what they highlight as their selling points?

So, both Logic Pro and Pro Tools will…

  • Give you a professional sequencer
  • Allow multi-track recording
  • Allow use of a full range of plugins and VSTs that you get through purchase or for free ones
  • Need a relatively powerful computer to avoid lag and swearing
  • Allow you some pretty tight editing
  • WIll work perfectly well for mixing and mastering
  • Come with a lot of automated features
  • Depend on the room that you’re recording in – every room sounds different
  • Depend on the output hardware you’re using – I’m talking monitors and headphone here
  • Depend on your own ears and knowledge and skills as a producer to make the output sound good
  • Depend on your ability to put good sounds in to be able to get better sounds out – as my first producer told me: “You can’t polish a turd”

I think that heads off the generalizations about both products. Now, let’s see if we can pick out some unique identifiers for them…

Logic Pro

Well, the elephant in the room of unique identifiers here is that Logic Pro is only available for Mac. This isn’t the time or the place for PC Vs Mac debates, so I’ll leave it at that, just as a point of information. That aside, here’s a list of the things that Logic Pro highlight as being important:

  • Smart Tempo: this means that it’ll automate the timing of your tracks; gone are the days where you start by playing to a click – now can just do what you feel, and it’ll match you
  • Brushes: this is for using brushes or drums kits designed for brushes, rather than sticks, to give that gentler sound for jazz or roots
  • Logic Remote: this turns your iPhone or iPad into a remote device for tweaking your tracks, or using as a virtual instrument
  • Plug-ins: they’re particularly proud of their ChromaVerb reverb, and the Vintage EQ collection
  • Flex Time: lets you move the form to the correct beat without having to cut the sample – that’s super-useful!
  • Flex Pitch: this lets you tweak the parameters of a note within the sample – helpful if there’s just one note that’s slightly off

Pro Tools

So, as noted earlier, one of Pro Tools’ unique identifiers is that it has versions for both Windows and Mac. Again, I’m just leaving that statement there. I’m not getting into it. Now, looking for a comparable but unique list of features is tricky with Pro Tools, and I’m not sure if that’s because their marketing copy isn’t as sharp or what, but I’ll do what I can with what I’ve got.

Here are the main things – and yes, there will be similarities to what you read in the last section.

  • Project Revisions: Not sure if the take you’re listening to was the right one? Drop a different take in on the fly and see if it’s working better
  • Pro Tools Control: An official app to let you control things from your phone
  • QuickPunch Recording: Lets you quickly replace a mistake, as if it never happened
  • Plug-ins: Yeah, it includes an awful lot of stuff to help further shape the sounds you’re working with
  • Cloud Collaboration: Now, that’s a cool one; you can easily connect with other Pro Tools users who might want in on your creative action, or you can get in on theirs
  • Artist Community: The best way to describe it is as a private social network for you and other Pro Tools users
  • Elastic Time: Lets you quickly adjust the tempo of your project
  • Elastic Pitch: Lets you quickly and easily fix bum notes

Usability

I’m actually not going to dwell on this one too much. Here’s the thing – and it goes for pretty much all of the different categories of computer software available – when you can use one DAW, you can pretty much use all of them.

The processes and outputs are identical; it’s just a matter of figuring out what’s different in the user interfaces. In DAWs, particularly with Logic Pro and Pro Tools, the debate of which one is more usable is as contentious as debating Mac Vs PC. Not just contentious, but ultimately, kind of pointless.

Both Logic Pro and Pro Tools are just as usable as each other, to the point where it’s not worth splitting into sections. Most producers will have started using one or the other, and just stick with it, I guess just for simple comfort with the familiar. I don’t think there’s anything unreasonable about that.

However, it might be of use to speak to that usability. I would say that with either Logic Pro or Pro Tools, they both have an intimidating amount of features for a newbie. Where do you even start? A common complaint on Reddit on the matter is that even tutorials about either product are barely intelligible, and are too long.

But, you’ve got to start somewhere if you want to be a professional someday. In this respect, I think just getting stuck in and making mistakes is the best way to get to grips with the usability of high-end DAWs that try and cram in a lot of functionality.

If you get stuck, it’s highly unlikely that you’re the first person, so a solution is more than likely just a Google away. I’ve mentioned Mac Vs PC a few times throughout this review. It stands to reason that if you’re already a PC user, you won’t want to buy a whole new machine, so it stands to reason that you’ll go with Pro Tools. There. That’s your decision made, and now you can go with it.

If you’re a Mac user, you likely enjoy the exclusivity of stuff that’s only available on the operating system, so you’ll probably lean towards Logic Pro. Congratulations. Both of you are using software that’s just as usable, and just as confusing to beginners, as the other is. Let’s all relax.

Conclusion

Logic Pro

Logic Pro is a slick piece of kit. Its general feel is that it’s aimed at Mac loyalists. Mostly because that’s the only platform it’s available on. The Smart Tempo is a cool feature, but, like many other pieces of digital innovation in music, it begs the question: does it reduce the skill required to be a good musician?

Logic

Consistent timing is a key part of editing music: it’s impossible and infuriating to try it otherwise. To date, and with lower cost DAWs, you did achieve this on your records by having your drummer play along with a click track, and the rest of the band followed the drummer.

That’s literally how making a record worked. The timing, and therefore the ease of editing was the drummer’s responsibility. Now, it seems like that doesn’t even matter anymore. Much like what AutoTune did with vocals.

Pro Tools

Just by the fact that it’s available for both Windows and Mac implies a lot more flexibility on Pro Tool’s part. Add in the tiered pricing approach that starts with a free version, and the fact that they offer discounts to schools and teachers, and it basically comes across as more appealing.

The Best Way To Learn Logic Pro X

In saying that, the flexible pricing doesn’t do anything in terms of its functionality: you’re not getting a dumbed down version, and you’ll still need a significant amount of time figuring it out if you’re starting from scratch.

The free tier is useful though, especially for newbies, and it’ll certainly act as a gentle introduction to some of the more technical terminology in music production.

Learn Logic Free

The automation, the plugins, the usability… all completely on a par with each other. That’s why so many hits today are created on one or the other.

If you’re a total newbie, I’d recommend starting with Pro Tools. If you already have a Windows computer, you don’t have to buy a whole new machine, and, you can start yourself off with the free version so you can get a feel for digital music production, its processes, and its terminology. You can keep upgrading as you need, or as you can afford.
